Stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas of Abia State have called on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, to contest the state’s governorship election in 2027.
The call formed part of a growing political movement within the Ngwa bloc, considered one of the most influential in the state, as community leaders openly endorsed Kalu as their preferred candidate.
The appeal was made during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Chief Uzoma Ihuka to contest the House of Representatives seat under the All Progressives Congress for Isiala Ngwa Federal Constituency.
Speaking at the event, Kalu expressed confidence in the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as a unifying force that has strengthened the APC across the country.
He said, “I am now in Isialangwa and they’re saying, come and run for governor. The same way I answered the people of Bende, the same way I answered the people of Obingwa is the same way I will answer you. I have received your request for me to run for governor for Abia State, but I will respond in the coming days.”
Kalu stated that while other political parties were grappling with internal crises, the APC remained stable and focused on delivering progress for Nigerians.
He added that the level of development being recorded under the APC-led Federal Government was only a glimpse of greater achievements ahead, particularly for Abia State.
The event also witnessed defections from opposition parties, especially the Labour Party, with new entrants citing renewed hope, purposeful leadership and visible progress within the APC as reasons for joining the ruling party.
Kalu assured the new members of inclusive governance, stressing that the party would continue to engage communities, identify their needs and implement practical solutions to improve livelihoods.
Responding to the calls for his governorship ambition, the Deputy Speaker said he would make his position known at the appropriate constitutional venue in Umuahia.
He said, “When we talk about governorship, when we talk about leading the people of Abia State, there is only one place the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has listed as the right place to exercise the power of the office of the governor, and that is Umuahia.
“It will not be in Isialangwa. It will not be in Obingwa or Aba. It will be in Umuahia. So wait for our invitation. We are going to invite you in a few days. When I hear it clearly on that day, I will respond.”
The event ended with renewed optimism among party members, amid indications of strengthening unity within the APC in Abia State.
