The National Assembly of Nigeria on Tuesday commissioned an ultra-modern newsroom as part of efforts to enhance transparency and strengthen legislative communication.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, said the facility reflects the legislature’s renewed commitment to professionalism, efficiency and improved public engagement.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ogunlana described the newsroom as a strategic investment aimed at improving information management, documentation of legislative proceedings and the credibility of the Assembly’s communication.
“In an era where communication defines credibility, this facility positions the National Assembly to carry out its responsibilities with professionalism and openness,” he said.
Ogunlana noted that the management had taken deliberate steps to improve service delivery and staff welfare, stressing that the workforce remained the backbone of the institution.
He added that the provision of modern tools and a conducive working environment would enable staff to perform optimally and enhance institutional output.
The Clerk also said the newsroom forms part of broader efforts to reposition the National Assembly for greater efficiency.
He urged stakeholders to embrace a strong maintenance culture, recalling that the National Assembly Printing Press was once among the most sophisticated in the country before its decline due to poor upkeep.
“Maintenance is not the responsibility of management alone. It is a collective duty. Preserving our facilities means preserving our progress,” he said.
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Directorate of Research and Information, Alli Umoru, described the newsroom as a strategic communication hub that would enhance real-time monitoring of legislative activities, combat misinformation and strengthen public trust.
He added that the facility would also serve as a training centre for Information Officers and support professional development.
The event was attended by senior management staff, legislators and other invited guests.
