The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced a five-day suspension of planned military strikes against Iran, citing “productive conversations” between both countries over the weekend.
Trump disclosed this in a post on Truth Social, where he said the decision was based on the “tone and tenor” of ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at resolving tensions in the Middle East.
“I AM PLEASE TO REPORT THAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE COUNTRY OF IRAN, HAVE HAD, OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS, VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS REGARDING A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF OUR HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST,” he wrote.
He added, “BASED ON THE TENOR AND TONE OF THESE IN DEPTH, DETAILED, AND CONSTRUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS, WITCH (sic) WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK, I HAVE INSTRUCTED THE DEPARTMENT OF WAR TO POSTPONE ANY AND ALL MILITARY STRIKES AGAINST IRANIAN POWER PLANTS AND ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE FOR A FIVE DAY PERIOD, SUBJECT TO THE SUCCESS OF THE ONGOING MEETINGS AND DISCUSSIONS.”
The development marks a shift in stance by the US leader, who had earlier threatened military action if Iran failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Monday evening.
As recently as Friday, Trump had downplayed the possibility of a ceasefire, insisting that dialogue would not necessarily translate into a halt in hostilities.
“We could have dialogue, but I don’t want to do a ceasefire,” he said.
The latest move signals a potential window for diplomacy as both nations continue discussions amid heightened tensions in the region.
