A member of the House of Representatives, Dr Midala Usman Balami, on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to intensify security measures and ensure the rescue of abducted victims in parts of Borno State.
Balami, who represents Askira/Uba-Hawul Federal Constituency, made the call while moving a motion of urgent public importance on the floor of the House.
Speaking in an interview granted in his office shortly after plenary, the lawmaker stressed the urgency of a more proactive security approach to curb the attacks.
He said, “Over time, some of these attacks have been repelled by security forces, particularly the military, in collaboration with local vigilante groups. However, we need a more proactive strategy.
“We need the establishment of military outposts and security formations around vulnerable communities, especially those close to areas where insurgents operate, to prevent these recurring attacks.”
The motion, titled “Stop the incessant killings in Askira/Uba-Hawul Federal Constituency,” was granted after he invoked Order Eight, Rule Five of the House Standing Orders.
Balami said recent attacks in his constituency had led to multiple deaths, destruction of property, and displacement of residents.
He disclosed that between 11 and 15 persons were killed in an attack on Popoku village, while about 20 others were abducted along the Buratai–Damboa road.
He added that several communities, including those in Musa Ward and parts of Hawul, had come under repeated attacks.
“Many people have lost their lives, properties have been destroyed, and socio-economic activities have been disrupted,” he said.
“Families are in distress, and fear has gripped communities across my constituency.”
Balami acknowledged efforts by the Federal Government and the Borno State Government to address insecurity but stressed the need for stronger collaboration.
“We are not unaware of the efforts being made, particularly by the Borno State Government in strengthening local vigilante groups and supporting the security architecture. However, there is a need to scale up these interventions,” he said.
He urged security agencies to enhance surveillance in affected areas and establish military outposts to prevent further attacks.
The lawmaker also called for the immediate rescue of the abducted victims and their safe reunion with their families.
Balami further appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant bodies to provide relief materials, including food, shelter, and psychosocial support, to displaced persons.
“The protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government and must be treated with urgency,” he added.
He urged residents to remain calm and resilient amid the security challenges.
