The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, widely known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died after the incident.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, noting that the arrest followed a formal petition submitted to the police.
According to the statement, the alleged incident occurred on June 1, 2026, after the young woman reportedly travelled to Asaba at the suspect’s invitation.
Edafe explained that Ogbonna had allegedly offered to train the victim in content creation through a programme he promoted on his social media platforms. Upon her arrival, he was said to have taken her to a hotel, where he allegedly raped and physically assaulted her.
“The victim later returned home in a distressed condition and narrated her ordeal to her parents,” the police spokesman said.
The police further revealed that before her death, the young woman recorded a video in which she recounted the alleged assault and the emotional trauma she experienced.
“She eventually died after ingesting a toxic substance despite efforts to save her life,” Edafe added.
Following the petition, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Commander in Effurun to immediately commence a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Acting on the directive, detectives launched an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect. The police noted that Ogbonna has made useful statements during preliminary interrogation.
“The investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police assured the family of the deceased and members of the public that the Command would conduct a thorough, impartial and professional investigation.
He stressed that anyone found culpable would be made to face the full weight of the law.
Oyeniyi also urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the police to carry out their investigation, assuring that justice would be pursued in line with due process.
