The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has commended journalists in the Federal Capital Territory for their role in informing the public and promoting national development, describing the media as a critical partner in strengthening security communication.
Disu gave the commendation on Saturday while addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ FCT Council during its congress in Abuja.
The police chief said his relationship with the media had always been built on mutual respect and professionalism, stressing that journalists should be treated as respected professionals rather than beggars.
According to him, the media plays an indispensable role in shaping public opinion and supporting national development.
“I have always had a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with journalists. They are professionals who deserve respect and should never be treated as beggars,” he said.
Disu also called for stronger collaboration between the police and journalists, noting that improved partnership would enhance public trust and strengthen security communication.
He further urged both police officers and media practitioners to conduct themselves responsibly in the discharge of their duties, emphasising that professionalism and good conduct leave lasting impressions in society.
Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, congratulated the IGP on his appointment and described him as a longstanding friend of the press.
Ike expressed confidence in his leadership and assured him of the council’s readiness to work closely with the police in reporting security issues objectively.
She also disclosed that the police chief would be invited as a special guest to the council’s 2026 Press Week celebration.
The NUJ chairman reaffirmed the council’s commitment to responsible journalism and support for initiatives aimed at strengthening security and governance in the Federal Capital Territory.
