The Nigeria/Trinidad and Tobago Parliamentary Friendship Group has officially taken off, with its inaugural meeting held on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the House of Representatives in Abuja.
The group’s chairperson, Hon. Princess Chinwe Clara Nnabuife, welcomed members and expressed gratitude to the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, for constituting the group.
Honourable Nnabuife said the core essence the Nigeria/Trinidad and Tobago Parliamentary Friendship Group aims to strengthen legislative ties between the two countries through exchanges, workshops, and seminars.
Nnabuife explained that the group’s jurisdiction includes expanding Nigeria’s legislative relationship with Trinidad and Tobago and exchanging parliamentary programs, practices, and procedures to deepen Nigeria’s legislative democracy and good governance.
“This development is a significant step in fostering diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago, which established bilateral relations in 1973. The two countries share a common heritage as former British colonies and are both members of the Commonwealth of Nations.
The establishment of the parliamentary friendship group is expected to promote cooperation between the two nations in areas such as trade, law, and culture.
As Hon. Princess Nnabuife noted, the group’s appointment is a testament to the House Leadership’s devotion to deepening the existing bonds between Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago.
