By Mercy Gadia Adi

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a public advisory to clarify new guidelines for users of its self-service portal for National Identification Number (NIN) modifications. The announcement emphasizes restricted access protocols aimed at enhancing data security and reducing unauthorized access attempts.

According to the Head, Corporate Communications Unit, Kayode Adegoke (Ph.D.), access to the self-service portal is now strictly tied to the browser and device initially used during account creation. This means applicants must log in using the exact browser and device used when the account was first registered.

“These measures are designed to safeguard the identity and personal data of all user, Your self-service account is uniquely tied to the browser and device used during registration. Attempting to use a different browser or device may result in access issues.”Dr. Kayode said

Key Guidelines Outlined:

Single Browser and Device Access:

The self-service account is device- and browser-specific.

Cache Clearing Warning:

Users are cautioned against clearing their browser cache, as this may trigger a reset and lock the account.

Unlock Attempt Limit:

If locked, users are allowed a maximum of five unlock requests. After this limit, no further attempts will be processed without going through an official unlinking process.

Unlinking Process:

In the event of being locked out due to browser reset or cache clearing, users must request to have their account unlinked before gaining new access.

The NIMC emphasized that these policies are part of enhanced security protocols aimed at protecting user data against unauthorized access and potential identity fraud.

“We urge all users to follow these guidelines carefully to avoid delays in their data modification process. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated,” Dr. Adegoke added.

The Commission advised users who require further assistance to reach out via the official support email: nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng.
