The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, has congratulated the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, on his election as Vice President of the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH).
In a statement issued Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Dr Bolaji Akinola, the Minister described Dantsoho’s election as “a testament to his outstanding leadership and a global recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in maritime affairs.”
Oyetola linked the achievement to the Federal Government’s ongoing port modernisation programme, noting that the reforms are positioning Nigerian ports to meet global standards.
“This election is a recognition of the ongoing reforms to reposition Nigerian ports and the blue economy drive of the Federal Government,” the Minister said.
“It validates our commitment to creating a more efficient, secure, and competitive maritime environment, which is a key component of our national economic strategy.”
He explained that the port modernisation initiative aims to overhaul infrastructure, deploy cutting-edge technology, and streamline processes to transform Nigeria into a leading maritime hub in Africa.
The International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH), which serves as a consultative body to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other UN agencies, unites more than 300 ports and port-related businesses across 90 countries. It plays a vital role in shaping global port policy, fostering sustainable development, and promoting industry collaboration.
Oyetola expressed confidence that Dantsoho’s new role will advance Nigeria’s interests internationally.
“His wealth of experience will enable him to make impactful contributions to the IAPH and further elevate Nigeria’s voice in global maritime policy debates,” he said.
