…Deputy Speaker Backs Innovative ‘Special Force’ Proposal

The House of Representatives on Thursday intensified efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s security system as Hon. Wale Raji (APC–Lagos) unveiled major proposals to strengthen national defence and curb the rising wave of insecurity across the country.
Speaking during a special plenary session on national security, Raji commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving fresh recruitment into the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army, but warned that recruitment alone was insufficient in the face of escalating threats.
“New recruits will require extensive training and time to gain experience, meanwhile, we have seasoned hands whose skills and knowledge can still be harnessed, ” he said. “
Raji urged the Federal Government to extend the service years of military and police personnel nearing retirement—subject to medical fitness—arguing that the Public Service Rules allow such extensions. He proposed an additional two to five years for officers whose experience he described as ndispensable at this critical time.
The lawmaker also called for the establishment of Special Courts or Tribunals to fast-track the handling of terrorism and banditry cases. He proposed a six-month window for investigation, prosecution, and conviction, saying swift justice would send a strong message to criminal elements.
Pushing further reforms, Raji urged the National Assembly to hasten constitutional amendments to establish state police and strengthen local government contributions to security. He said community-based models used in Lagos had proven effective in tackling local crimes and aiding prosecution.
Responding to the presentation, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu praised the proposals as “thought-provoking,” particularly the call to retain experienced officers who leave service due to age limits, promotions, or political appointments.
“It is a very stimulating suggestion, we will dissect it further and reflect it appropriately in our resolutions,”Kalu added.
The House is expected to consolidate the recommendations into actionable measures as part of ongoing efforts to reinforce Nigeria’s security framework.
