Abuja, FCT—House of Representative on Thursday mandated the Nigerian boundary commission (NBC), and Nigerian Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to swiftly rise to occasion to resolve the current crisis between the Oju and Konshisha Federal constituencies Benue state.
This call came when a member representing Oju/Obi federal constituency Rt. Hon. Evang. David Agada Ogewue lamented over the escalating security crises and devastating flood disasters affecting communities in Benue State during the plenary seasons recently as a motion of urgent importance.
The motion underscores the dire need for immediate intervention from both state and federal agencies to address the plight of affected residents.
Citing constitutional provisions that prioritize the safety and welfare of Nigerians, Ogewue recalled previous communal clashes rooted in land disputes between the Bonta and Ukpute communities. The conflict he said, has resulted in tragic loss of livee and destruction of property, exacerbated by inaction on boundary demarcation by relevant authorities.
According to him, The situation worsened with the recent flooding that has submerged vast areas, rendering essential roads impassable and displacing many residents. “Survivors face acute shortages of food and shelter, he said. raising alarms about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
Hon. Ogewu In response to this dire situation proposed a series of resolutions, including:
Urgent assistance from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials; Enhanced security measures, including a combined operation base for security forces in the affected areas, and a mandated resolution of boundary disputes by the National Boundary Commission to prevent further violence.
The motion serves as a critical appeal for swift action to restore peace and provide relief to the beleaguered communities of Oju and Obi in Benue State.
