The member representing Isoko North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Ukodhiko Jonathan Ajirioghene, on Sat condemned the harassment and assault of young women during a community festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
Ukodhiko spoke on Saturday via a statement, after a fact-finding visit to the leadership of Ozoro Kingdom, led by the Ovie, His Royal Majesty Anthony Uvietobore Ogbogbo (Ibuka I), following the incident.
According to a statement by the lawmaker, the attack occurred after criminal elements hijacked what was meant to be a peaceful community festival.
He said, “The reports of harassment and assault of young women by criminal elements are heartbreaking and unacceptable. Such acts are evil, condemnable, and have no place in our society.”
The lawmaker dismissed reports circulating on social media about the existence of a “rape festival” in Ozoro, describing the claim as false and misleading.
“Let me state this clearly: the Isoko people are known for their hospitality, dignity, and strong moral values. We will not tolerate any behaviour capable of tarnishing our collective identity,” he said.
Rep Ukodhiko commended the leadership of Ozoro Kingdom, including the President General of the Ozoro Progress Union, Odio Chief Beckley Asiafa, and the Chairman of the Ozoro Council of Chiefs, Chief Emmanuel Edevor, for cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
“There is no such tradition in Ozoro Kingdom or anywhere in Isoko land,” he added.
The lawmaker assured that those responsible for the incident would be brought to justice.
“I want to assure the general public that all those involved in this heinous crime will be brought to book, and nothing will be swept under the carpet,” he said.
He also expressed solidarity with the victims, assuring them of support as they recover.
Ukodhiko further appreciated the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, the Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, and security agencies for their swift response.
He urged residents to uphold values of respect, safety and justice in their communities.
