The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to integrating artificial intelligence into modern policing, saying the technology is already transforming global security operations.
This was the focus of the Second AI-POL Leadership Dialogue Workshop on Advancing Innovation, Governance and the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Law Enforcement, held on Wednesday in Abuja.
The workshop brought together senior police officers, technology experts and international partners to explore practical applications of AI in policing, emerging risks, and global best practices.
Speaking on the outcome of the engagement, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, said the discussions underscored the urgency of adapting to technological change in law enforcement.
“Artificial intelligence is no longer a future consideration. It is already reshaping how security agencies operate globally,” he said.
He added that the Nigeria Police would continue to strengthen partnerships aimed at improving operational efficiency and accountability.
A key highlight of the workshop was a presentation on the 5th Global Meeting for AI and Law Enforcement, which recognised Nigeria as a priority partner for the African AI Policing Pilot.
Participants were urged to ensure that insights gained from the workshop are implemented within their respective commands rather than remain theoretical.
The Police Force said the initiative forms part of ongoing reforms to build a more responsive, intelligence-driven and technology-enabled policing system in Nigeria.
Experts at the forum also stressed that while AI offers significant benefits for crime detection and intelligence gathering, it must be guided by strong ethical standards and regulatory safeguards.
