The Nigeria Police Force has announced the death of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Kanayo V. Uzuegbu, describing his passing as a significant loss to the institution.
Uzuegbu died on Friday, May 30, 2026, after serving the Force for over three decades.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said the late senior officer served with “distinction, professionalism, and dedication to public safety.”
A native of Umuaka Community in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State, Uzuegbu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and trained at the Police Academy, Kaduna.
He held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Port Harcourt, a Higher Diploma in Strategic Studies from the University of Maiduguri, and a Master’s degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from the University of Nigeria.
The statement noted that Uzuegbu also undertook several professional courses in counter-terrorism, human rights, law of armed conflict, and strategic leadership during his career.
He served in various command and administrative roles across state and zonal commands, as well as at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
His notable postings included Squadron Commander, No. 15 Police Mobile Force, Ilorin; Area Commander in Owerri and Karu; Director, Central Planning Training Unit, Police Staff College, Jos; Commissioner of Police, Operations Communication, Force Headquarters; and Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command.
Uzuegbu also served internationally as Commander of Sector 8, El-Dain, during the African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur, Sudan.
The police leadership, while condoling with his family, described him as “an officer who brought honour to the Force and served the nation with commendable dedication.”
“The Nigeria Police Force prays that the Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and grants his family the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” the statement added.
