The newly appointed House Minority Leader, Hon. Fred Agbedi, has described his emergence as a defining moment for the opposition in the House of Representatives, pledging to lead a more vibrant and assertive minority caucus.
Agbedi, who represents Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, spoke on Thursday following his emergence as leader of the minority caucus.
He expressed gratitude to his colleagues for entrusting him with the leadership role.
“I want to appreciate God for what happened today in the chambers, where the entire minority caucus mandated me to lead them as the Minority Leader. I so appreciate them and thank God for this opportunity,” he said.
He described the development as a victory for parliamentary independence, noting that the caucus was able to determine its leadership without external interference.
“It was a great day in the history of Parliament that today the minority caucus was able to decide for themselves who leads the minority desk. We also thank the Speaker and principal officers across party lines for supporting what is right. It is good to promote democracy,” he added.
Speaking ahead of Democracy Day, Agbedi acknowledged that while Nigeria’s democratic journey has recorded gains, many citizens are currently facing hardship.
“Nigerians have felt the effect of democracy, but it depends on the period you are referring to. During the PDP years, there were notable achievements that impacted lives positively, such as the expansion of telecommunications and rail transportation,” he said.
He, however, expressed concern over the current economic situation.
“From the Buhari administration to the present, life has become more unbearable for Nigerians. As a member of government, I am concerned,” he said.
Agbedi urged political leaders to rise to the occasion and deliver better governance.
“If we continue this way, you never can tell what will happen to our democracy. The hardship is biting very hard, and that is not the way a country should go,” he warned.
Outlining his priorities as Minority Leader, he assured Nigerians of a more robust legislative opposition.
“What I can assure Nigerians is that there will be a stronger opposition voice. We will deepen legislative discourse and ensure robust deliberations on bills and motions,” he said.
He stressed the importance of minority contributions in shaping legislative outcomes.
“While the majority may have their way, the minority must be heard. In many cases, minority positions provide deeper insights that help improve decisions. We will ensure that reality is taken into consideration in all legislative processes,” he added.
