Argentina produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the 2026 World Cup, scoring three late goals to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter in Atlanta on Tuesday.
The defending champions, who trailed 2-0 deep into the second half, showed resilience and class to overturn the deficit and secure a place in the quarter-finals.
Egypt appeared to have taken firm control of the match in the 55th minute when they thought they had gone two goals ahead. However, the Video Assistant Referee ruled out the goal for a foul in the buildup, denying the North Africans what would have been a commanding lead.
Despite the setback, Egypt extended their advantage in the 67th minute through Mostafa Zico, who finished off a swift counterattack initiated by Mohamed Salah.
Earlier, Yasser Ibrahim had stunned Argentina in the 15th minute, rising above the defence to head home from a well-delivered ball by Marwan Attia.
Argentina had an opportunity to level early in the game after Nicolas Tagliafico was brought down in the box, but Lionel Messi saw his penalty saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, who delivered an outstanding performance.
Speaking after the match, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said, “This team never gives up. Even at 2-0 down, we believed we could come back, and the players showed incredible character.”
Egypt coach Rui Vitória, however, lamented the collapse, saying, “We were in control for long periods, but small mistakes at this level are punished severely.”
Argentina began their comeback in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero headed home to reduce the deficit and spark hope for the South Americans.
The equaliser came in the 83rd minute as Messi capitalised on a loose ball in the box, firing a powerful shot that deflected off the goalkeeper’s hand and into the net.
With momentum fully on their side, Argentina completed the turnaround in stoppage time when Enzo Fernandez headed in the winner, sealing a memorable victory.
Messi, reflecting on the dramatic win, said, “It was a difficult game, but we kept fighting. These are the moments that define great teams.”
The victory ensures Argentina’s progression to the quarter-finals, keeping alive their hopes of defending the World Cup title in what is already being described as one of the greatest matches in tournament history.
