The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday granted bail in the sum of N200 million to the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore.
Justice Muhammad Umar, who delivered the ruling, ordered the activist to produce two sureties as part of the bail conditions. The court held that one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second must be an individual who owns landed property within Abuja.
The judge further directed that both sureties must be verified by the prosecution before the bail can be perfected.
In addition, the court ordered Sowore to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court pending the determination of the case.
Sowore is currently facing prosecution by the Department of State Services over allegations that he made defamatory claims against President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in posts published on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.
At the previous sitting on June 24, the court had adjourned proceedings to June 30 for continuation, noting that pending applications and arguments would be addressed as the case progresses.
The court had also revoked the earlier bail granted to Sowore on self-recognition in December 2025 and subsequently ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre after he failed to appear at a prior hearing.
