The Federal Government has postponed the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), earlier scheduled to hold in Abuja from June 28 to 30, 2026.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the government said the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and partners involved in preparations for the conference.
The statement was signed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate.
It read, “This decision follows extensive consultations with key stakeholders and partners involved in preparations for the Conference. A new date for the Conference will be communicated in due course.”
The government expressed regret over any inconvenience the postponement may cause, while appreciating the continued support of international and domestic partners.
“We deeply regret any inconvenience this postponement may cause and appreciate the understanding, support, and continued cooperation of all stakeholders,” the statement added.
Nigeria also acknowledged the support of the Troika, the Global Leaders Group on AMR, the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR, member states, development partners, civil society organisations, academia and youth networks.
The ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to host the global event, noting that preparatory activities would continue under the Local Organising Committee.
It added that engagement with stakeholders would be sustained ahead of a new date for the conference.
“Antimicrobial resistance remains one of the most significant global health challenges of our time, requiring sustained commitment and coordinated action across countries and sectors,” the minister said.
Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to advancing global collaboration on antimicrobial resistance through the One Health approach, and pledged to welcome delegates once a new date is announced.
