The Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday honoured fallen United Nations peacekeepers as it joined the international community to commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, paying tribute to officers who died in the line of duty and reaffirming its commitment to global peace missions amid rising security threats.
In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid., the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, said the sacrifices of the fallen continue to inspire efforts toward a safer world.
“Their sacrifices remain a driving force in our collective pursuit of global peace and security,” he said.
The IGP said Nigerian police personnel had served with distinction in United Nations, African Union and regional peacekeeping operations, boosting the country’s global standing.
He noted that officers deployed to conflict zones had consistently demonstrated professionalism and resilience in complex environments.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” Disu called for sustained investment in peacebuilding, training, technology and international cooperation.
He warned that emerging threats such as terrorism, transnational crime, cybercrime and violent extremism require coordinated global responses.
“The evolving security landscape demands well-trained and properly equipped peacekeepers,” he added.
The police boss also called for increased participation of women in peacekeeping operations, describing their contributions as critical to mission success.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the force to strengthening its peacekeeping capacity and supporting global efforts to promote stability.
