The Nigeria Police Force has mourned the death of Inspector Habila Mangai, who was killed in a road traffic accident while on duty along the Owerri–Okigwe Road in Imo State.
The Force said the incident occurred on April 18, 2026, when the officer, attached to the Isiala Mbano Division, was conducting a lawful stop-and-search operation at Amaraku.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the inspector was knocked down by a Mack truck driven by one Chisom Ajah.
He said the injured officer was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
“The late inspector was performing his lawful duty when the unfortunate incident occurred. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary,” the statement read.
Placid added that the driver and the vehicle had been taken into custody and transferred to the State Motor Traffic Department in Owerri for a detailed investigation.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, commiserated with the family, colleagues of the deceased, and the Imo State Police Command over the loss.
He assured that the sacrifice of the officer would not be in vain, stressing that a thorough investigation had been launched to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Nigeria Police Force assures the public that justice will be served in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
The Force also urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations, and be mindful of officers on duty, particularly around checkpoints and operational posts.
