A member of the House of Representatives representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Uchenna Okonkwo, has expressed optimism about the prospects of the African Democratic Congress, declaring that Nigerians are prepared to reclaim the country.
Okonkwo made the remarks while speaking at the party’s National Convention, where he said he was “elated” by the level of enthusiasm displayed by members and supporters.
“I feel elated seeing the power and zeal that has been demonstrated by well-meaning Nigerians who understand that what we currently have under the APC is a hijack of democracy,” he said.
He noted that the convention reflects growing awareness among citizens that meaningful change must begin immediately.
“This convention has shown that Nigerians are standing firmly with this great party. They are ready to take back this country, and that is what we stand for,” he added.
The lawmaker also criticised what he described as the marginalisation of some legislators in the National Assembly who declined to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“We in the National Assembly have been relegated to the background because we refused to join them. But with ADC, we now have a voice to fight for true democracy — not just for ourselves, but for the youth, women, and all Nigerians,” he said.
Despite alleged threats from authorities, including concerns involving the Federal Capital Territory administration and electoral bodies, Okonkwo said the turnout at the convention underscored the resilience of party supporters.
“Regardless of the threats, Nigerians have shown that this movement will stand. What you see here today is a clear demonstration of that resolve,” he stated.
Reacting to whether the ruling party felt threatened by the ADC’s growing influence, he questioned what he described as contradictions in its posture.
“They claim to have 32 governors, enormous resources from subsidy removal, control of security outfits, and the support of the youth. So why are they panicking?” he asked.
According to him, the atmosphere at the convention signals an imminent political shift.
“The fear is palpable. Anyone who walks into this hall can see that a big change is coming — and that change is ADC,” Okonkwo said.
