Lionel Messi once again wrote his name into football history on Sunday night as he became the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history, powering defending champions Argentina to a 2-0 victory over Austria in Dallas.
The 38-year-old captain struck twice in a composed yet decisive display, taking his World Cup tally to 18 goals and surpassing the long-standing record held by Germany’s Miroslav Klose. His performance also moved him beyond Brazil legend Marta’s overall tournament scoring mark, further cementing his status in football folklore.
Argentina, dominant for large parts of the Group J encounter, secured their place in the knockout stage with a game to spare, continuing their strong defence of the title they won in Qatar 2022.
Messi opened the scoring in the first half after capitalising on sustained Argentine pressure, calmly finishing a move that showcased the team’s technical superiority in possession. The second goal arrived deep into stoppage time, as Argentina punished Austria on the counterattack, with Messi reacting quickest inside the box to seal the win.
Despite Austria’s disciplined pressing and organised defensive shape, they struggled to create meaningful chances against an experienced Argentina side marshalled by Messi’s influence in midfield and attack.
Speaking after the match, Messi described the victory as “important” and said it gave the team “peace of mind” heading into the knockout rounds.
“This win was hugely important after a lot of hard work,” he said. “We’re happy to have qualified, and now we focus on what comes next.”
The victory extended Argentina’s impressive run in the tournament, with Messi scoring in six consecutive World Cup matches and already registering five goals in just two games at the 2026 edition.
At nearly 39 years old, the Inter Miami forward continues to defy expectations, delivering performances that blend experience, vision and clinical finishing. His influence once again overshadowed a talented Argentina squad featuring Enzo Fernández, Lautaro Martínez and Alexis Mac Allister.
While questions remain about Argentina’s defensive resilience against stronger attacking opposition, their attacking firepower and Messi’s enduring brilliance has already made them one of the tournament’s standout sides.
For now, the football world is left to witness yet another historic chapter in the career of a player who continues to redefine greatness on the biggest stage.
