The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has confirmed that a Nigerian national, Jubril Akorede Abdulrahman, who was injured in a recent gas facility explosion in Qatar, has been discharged from hospital and is currently recuperating under the care of his employer.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols of the Commission, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM disclosed that Abdulrahman was among those affected by the explosion and fire incident that occurred at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar, on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
According to the statement, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, promptly intervened upon receiving news of the incident, closely monitoring the victim’s condition and keeping the Nigerian government adequately informed throughout the emergency.
The ambassador confirmed that the explosion occurred at about 10:30 p.m. local time at the Qatar Energy-operated facility.
Qatar Energy, during a press conference held in Doha on June 22, clarified that the explosion was accidental and not linked to sabotage or any hostile activity. The company explained that the facility had only recently resumed operations after a planned shutdown that began in December 2025.
Emergency response teams from Qatar Energy, alongside the Qatar Civil Defence, were said to have successfully contained the fire.
The incident reportedly left 66 people injured, including nationals of Qatar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, India, and Nepal. Authorities noted that none of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed relief over Abdulrahman’s recovery and discharge from hospital while sympathising with other victims still undergoing treatment.
“We are glad that Jubril Abdulrahman is recovering and in safe hands. Our prayers are with him and with everyone still receiving treatment,” she said.
Dabiri-Erewa also urged Qatar Energy to ensure sustained medical and welfare support for Abdulrahman and other affected workers until their full recovery.
The Commission further commended Ambassador Yakubu for his swift intervention and diligent monitoring of the situation, describing his actions as a reflection of dedicated consular service and commitment to the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.
