The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening accountability and operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force said the move was designed to refocus the unit on its core mandate, address operational inefficiencies, and reposition it as a credible internal oversight mechanism.
According to a statement on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the reorganisation would enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time oversight of personnel and operations across commands and departments.
“As part of the restructuring, the unit has been streamlined and strengthened to improve efficiency and align with the Force’s broader reform agenda,” the statement read.
The IGP also approved the appointment of Aliyu Abubakar as the Head of the Police Monitoring Unit.
Before his appointment, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State commands, where he was involved in high-profile investigations and efforts to modernise policing methods.
The statement noted that he is widely regarded as a professional officer committed to transparency and community engagement.
Disu said the reform was aimed at entrenching professionalism, discipline, and transparency within the Force, adding that the Monitoring Unit would play a central role in identifying operational lapses and enforcing standards.
“The Monitoring Unit will serve as a critical mechanism for ensuring accountability at all levels of the Force,” he stated.
The police reiterated their commitment to institutional reforms and the delivery of a more accountable and citizen-focused policing system.
