The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has installed a 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Anambra State, to improve access to diagnostic services in the South-East.
The facility, delivered through the NNPCL Foundation, was commissioned on Friday at the hospital’s permanent site in Nnewi.
Residents of Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia and Ebonyi states, as well as Delta State, are expected to benefit from the intervention.
Before the installation, patients reportedly travelled long distances and paid high fees to access MRI services.
Speaking at the event, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Bashir Bayo Ojulari, said the project would improve access to quality healthcare and enhance diagnosis.
Represented by the Managing Director of the foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, he said, “The installation reflects our commitment to building sustainable systems that improve the quality of life of Nigerians.”
Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, commended the initiative, noting that it would enhance accurate diagnosis and treatment in the region.
Also, the Executive Vice President, Business Services, Sophia Mbakwe, said the company remained committed to impactful social investments.
Represented by the Chief Supply Chain Officer, Isokariari Telema, she said the firm had sustained investments in infrastructure and social development.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Joseph Ugboaja, said the facility would reduce the burden on patients.
“For too long, patients in our catchment area have had to travel long distances to access this service at high cost. This installation will change that,” he said.
The MRI facility includes supporting infrastructure such as power systems, cooling units, monitoring equipment and other installations required for smooth operation.
